Check your status for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and register before 30 September to avoid fines of £5,000 - £45,000.
The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is a new mandatory initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency and therefore reducing carbon emissions by organisations in both the private and public sectors. Large energy users will have to monitor and record energy usage; then purchase allowances for each tonne of CO2 they forecast they will emit.
Although full participation within the scheme is limited to organisations who consumed more than 6,000MWh per annum in 2008; any organisation with at least one half hourly meter will need to register before the 30 September 2010 deadline.
Failure to register before the deadline will result in a one-off fine of up to £5,000 and a further fine of £500 per day up to a maximum of 80 days.
Looking forward, the scheme is designed to reward energy efficiency and penalise energy inefficiency. There will be financial incentives, via reduced energy bills, but a crucial element will be the potential revenue recycling, which will further reward those organisations who perform best in increasing their energy efficiency based on published league tables.
Organisations not only need to assess whether they qualify before registering, but also how they will deal with the ongoing requirements of CRC (including the robustness of their data) and how it fits within their wider sustainability strategies. All these are things we can help with.
