Speakers and briefing
The webcast will feature insight from Grant Thornton’s Head of Tax Francesca Lagerberg and Head of R&D Tax Samantha Vanags on the further questions raised in the Government’s recent response document (see briefing below). There will also be an opportunity to comment and ask questions.
Get up to speed with our briefing on the proposed changes to Research and Development (R&D) tax relief – this PDF includes a summary of the Government’s published response to the first round of consultation on the proposed changes, together with questions the Government is putting to the industry before finalising its changes.
About the R&D tax credits scheme
In December we posted about the R&D tax relief review – threats and opportunities for UK plc. Some early changes to R&D tax relief were introduced in the Budget in March. Then, last month, the Government published its response to the consultation on R&D tax credits, endorsing the effectiveness of the tax relief as a scheme to encourage innovation and growth in the UK and help make UK an attractive place in which to invest in research and development.
The Government has indicated that it intends to make further positive changes to the scheme. We invite you to be part of influencing those changes by taking part in our webcast on 27 July 2011 at 3pm BST.

We will be discussing – and want to hear your views on – the further questions asked in the consultation:
- On the proposals to allow large companies to claim for more routine activities.
- Should the relief for Qualifying Indirect Activities be retained?
- What difference would a move to an ‘above line credit’ make to a company’s R&D investment?
- Would companies welcome reform of the ‘going concern’ definition?
- What safeguards are needed to ensure the removal of the PAYE/NIC cap on the payable credit is not abused?
